rejoined Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough, for the summer and winter seasons after leaving Oxford Playhouse.

complained to Stephen Joseph, Artistic Director of Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, about the quality of his role in David Campton's Ring Of Roses; Stephen challenged Alan to write his own play with a better role for himself.

wrote a number of unproduced plays (between 1957 and 1959) which included: The Season; Relative Values; Mind Over Murder; The Party Game. Most of these plays are now lost and none have been performed.

became engaged to the actress Christine Roland - another member of the Studio Theatre Ltd company - whilst on tour in September / October to Leicester (immediately prior to this he had been engaged to one of the company's stage management team, Ann Summers, for several months).
