Mr Whatnot becomes the first Ayckbourn play to transfer to the West End. It receives dreadful reviews and closes after just three weeks at the New Arts Theatre, London.

Leaves Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent, to concentrate on writing.

The failure of Mr Whatnot in London subsequently leads Alan to apply for a job as a radio drama producer at the BBC.

Final performance as a professional actor in Two For The Seesaw at Rotherham Civic Theatre.
