Notable Events

Starts working as a Radio Drama Producer for the BBC, based at Leeds. There he works closely with the producer Alfred Bradley and directs more than 50 radio plays in his first year.

Writes Meet My Father (subsequently retitled Relatively Speaking) for the Library Theatre, Scarborough, whilst still working for the BBC. It is written at Stephen Joseph's suggestion that Alan try to write a 'well-made play'.

Stephen Joseph is diagnosed with cancer. At the end of the summer season, he announces the Library Theatre, Scarborough, is to close due to lack of support from the Town Council.
